About Fraction Calculator

Fraction Calculator is a free fraction calculator that shows every step of the work, not just the answer. This tool is for students in elementary and middle school, the parents and teachers who help them, and adults who need quick, correct fractions for recipes, measurements, or splitting costs.

Who we are

Fraction Calculator is run by a small team based in the United States. We build the calculator, write the guides, test the results, and read every message that comes in through our Contact Us page.

Why we built it

Fractions are where a lot of people first decide they’re bad at math. The rules change from one operation to the next, adding needs a common denominator, multiplying doesn’t, and dividing means flipping the second fraction. Many online tools answer but hide the steps behind a sign-up or a paid plan. We give a calculator that explains the method for free, you can see why the answer is what it is. The full steps are free, with no sign-up.

What the calculator does

  • Adds, subtracts, multiplies, and divides fractions
  • Works with proper fractions, improper fractions, mixed numbers, and whole numbers
  • Gives every answer in simplest form and shows it as a mixed number, a decimal, and a percent
  • Shows the working, step by step
  • Converts decimals to fractions, including repeating decimals
  • Simplifies a single fraction and converts between mixed numbers and improper fractions
  • Works on phones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers

Alongside the tool, our guides explain each method in plain language, with worked examples and quick ways to check your own answer.

How we check accuracy

A fraction calculator is only useful if you can trust it, so we don’t write rules or examples from memory. Each one is checked against an authoritative source before it goes on the site:

  • Common Core State Standards for Mathematics for definitions, methods and which grade each skill belongs to
  • Wolfram MathWorld for formal definitions, such as reciprocals and when a decimal terminates
  • OpenStax Prealgebra, a free university-level textbook, for step-by-step procedures like borrowing with mixed numbers
  • The U.S. Department of Education’s fractions practice guide (IES, NCEE 2010-4039) for the mistakes students most often make

Corrections

If you find an error, contact us. We check the report against the sources above, fix anything wrong, and will update it.
